Do any of you use a boat in salt water with a short transom(15 inch or boat that uses short shaft motor)? How do you find it? Thinking about a 16 foot alum 73 inch beam boat and am waiting for the warm weather to arrive. Have been told that they are not seaworthy by some and told by others that the advent of the long shaft in popularity is a relatively recent thing (20 years or so)and that it is fine.

Re: SHORT TRANSOM

Howdy, Newhook.

Long (20") shafts and transoms have been around since the 50s at least. It is the Extra Long (25") that have been around for about 20 years. The 30" (don't know what they call them) are relatively new.

I would not take an aluminum skiff with a 15" transom out of sheltered waters unless it has a deep splashwell, and even then I would be paranoid about following seas, wakes and backing down too quickly.

If you want to take a small boat to sea, get a Boston Whaler.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
