Should Alpha One reservoir drain when changing gear lube?

Should the gear lube reservoir in my 1996 Alpha One empty out when I change the lube? Should I take the cap off the reservoir when changing lube? The lube level in the reservoir changed very little the last time I changed the lube in the drive. Could an air pocket have formed?

it would take a real long time to drain

its better to unclip it and pour out the oil if your useing merc syn oil the magic stuff collects on the bottom of the tank and needs to be cleaned out

tommays

Does this imply that I should use a something other that Merc oil? Not sure what "magic stuff" means....sounds a little sarcastic, eh? ;)

I think what tom is talking about is that the junk will settle to the bottom of your tank!

i think the merc syn oil is the best thing going BUT there is no movement in the tank so the Additives settel out over time and need to be cleaned so the tank does not clog

i learned it here from some pros and they were right

tommays

even the old merc shop manual states to clean the resevoir at least once per year.
I see some with 1/2" of mud in the bottom.
buy the manual, read it instead of the capt crunch box in the morning and soon you will have it :) :)
I am serious.
instead of the sunday funnies grab a copy of merc manual #14 and read it page for page cover to cover. you will be amazed whats in it.
