I'm trying to figure out why my motor is hesitating. Should gas tank vent be open while running? Also, should the motor turn completely over when I'm doing a compression test at the plugs?

Howdy, HE.

Yes, keep the vent open when running.

When doing a compression test you should turn the engine over four or five times for each cylinder.

Good luck. :)

Always leave the vent open while running the motor. The tank builds up pressure and has to release it somewhere

The purpose of the vent in addition to what ST said is that it allows air to replace the used gas and keeps a vacuum in the gas tamk from happening. Without it open when running the motor will eventually stop. ;)
