Should I buy?

I have the opportunity to buy what I believe is a 1990 21' Cuddy Cabin made by Sunbird for $500. I haven't seen the engine yet, so I don't know the size, but it is an OMC engine. Also, the engine needs to be replaced as there is a crack in the block. I'm told that the interior is in good shape with no soft spots in the floor. I need to check these facts for myself.

My question is, assuming all of these facts are true. Is this boat worth the $500 to buy and replace the engine?

I've heard to stay away from OMC since they are no longer around, but since I will be replacing the engine does that matter?

Re: Should I buy?

well if you replace with merc outdrive and crate motor your talking 10-15 thousand dollors depending on labor about $6000.00 for motor new and $2000.00- $2400.00 for alpha outdrive weather you get refebished or band new. personally i'd stay away if you bought it for $500. chances are you can sell off parts and make money then chop the hull and deliever to local land fill. now you maybe be able to find a used merc. motor that runs good with a few hours and an ungly outdrive all depend on your luck and wallet.

Are you getting a trailer too? If the hull really is solid and that means the deck & stringers are not rotted, and you have a serviceable trailer, the $500.00 is cheap enough. As for the powerplant, I'd scour other listings and find a donor boat. You can usually find something that's got a damaged or rotted hull but a working eninge/outdrive and swap. As for the rest, just cut it up with a sawzall or chainsaw and haul it off in pieces. Probably best to take some pics and post them up of the deck, etc. to get some real advice.

Yes, the trailer is included and appears to be in good shape.

Sunbirds had POOR (putting it mildly) construction in the hulls. :(

If you want buy and part it all out.

Re: Should I buy?

Thanks for everyone's input. I hope to go over this evening and look at the boat in detail. I'll let you know what I decide.
