Should I check it out? 1970's Merc 90 w/ controls $150

Don't really need another motor, but this sounds like a good deal... maybe just to keep as a spare.

No tilt/trim. Won't run (no spark); shop he took it to said it had "good" compression (but didn't have the #'s), and they replaced the stator.

He's about an hour away from me. Is it worth looking at?

I am in the same boat you are. I don't need any more outboards. But I can't help it when I find a deal! I just purchased a late 1970's 85hp Evinrude. The think looks brand new! I haven't picked it up yet though. The guy said it looks new in and out. It came with power trim and 3 sets of controls. I picked it up on Ebay for $100. So I had to buy it! Shipping is a couple hundred. But it's still a deal to me. So I'd say that doesn't sound too bad to me. As long as you don't have to dump too much money into it. You can get onto NADA.com and see what the motor is worth. I looked at a 1974 85hp Evinrude I just got for $400, and it said it is only worth $55 fair market value! I was blown away! Maybe the people on Ebay should look at that first and sell their motors (to us) cheaper;-) Anyway, that doesn't sound too bad. As long as you don't dump a lot of money into it. Good luck!

Joey, If it is a Distributor CDI Ignition model, spare parts are very expensive, if available. Also, hopefully you are handy since shops do not like to work on those oldies.


If the motor was in good running condition, it might be worth $300, so keep that in mind...

Iowa's a little further than "an hour away" from me! You deliver?

It's a good deal, if nothing else than for parts, but 1) I don't have an engine hoist to get it out of my truck, and 2) no stations around me have any gas, so I'd have get creative going to pick it up.

Think I'll pass on this one.
