Should I convert to disk brakes ??

I've got an 18 foot SeaRay bowrider (outboard) on an Eagle trailer. I estimate the total towed weight to be 3,000 lbs or maybe a little less.

I recently saw a complete disk brake conversion kit for $299.00. Seems like a good price to me.

I'm not having any troubles with my drum brakes, but would I realize better brake performance with disks ?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that since disk brakes require more hydraulic pressure, they are not good candidates for light trailer loads. But I don't know if 3K lbls is considered heavy or light for this question, or if it's even true.

Any advice ??

You didn't say whether you have surge or electric brakes, but I think they would perform about the same. . . .except: Disk brakes work when they are wet and are easier to inspect, which should happen before every trip.

3000lbs+ tends to be the point where many say that disc brakes really have an advantage.

The benefits over the drum brakes that you have now are that they don't need adjustments and are easier to washdown.

$299 is a good price, but I follow the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" rule. However, maybe you are in a situation where maintenance is due anyways.

I have disc brakes on my current trailer for a boat that is at the same weight point as yours. They work great.

They are surge brakes, and I only use it in fresh water. They do not need any maintenance right now.

I guess I'll go with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" idea. At that price I was considering the swap if I would realize a substantial improvement in braking, which it doesn't sound like I will.

Thanks !!

I would just wait until it is time to repair what you have. That is what I did. I do like my disk brakes though.
