Should I get a tachometer for a 4-stroke outboard?

So, after my latest outboard blew up and I couldn't find a reasonably priced used one, I decided to order a brand-new one.

I ordered a Tohatsu 20hp Model MFS20CEFS

It does not come with a tach. Should I get one? If so, is there a particular one you would suggest?

It has a rev limiter so I'm not sure if one is necessary. I'm trying to get this one to last 28 years like the last one I purchased. . . .

Thanks for the help

OK if you plan on keeping this motor for another 28 years wouldn't you want to match prop performance with the hull and type of loads you run. just for fuel efficency a tach will pay for itself! I know they aren't perfect but $50 for a tiny tach isn't too bad. Plus it will give you operation hours of your new motor. By the way we all hope you last another 28 years too!

Definitely get one, besides reading rpm also reads worked hours. Ideal to play with different prop pitches, adjust idle rpm, best fuel economy, scheduled preventive maintenances, plug clean, motor and tail oil change intervals.

Happy Boating
