I recently bought a 125 hp merc 1999 model.
it was having a problem pumping water on idle and the previous owner had just replaced the impeller and thermostat. once it started pumping it ran fine, which I needed to increase rpms to get it to start pumping.
I removed the lower unit and found the water pump housing had a bunch of a whtie substance (corrosion or salty grime??) on it and wasnt seated properly because of the corrossion. I cleaned it up and now it pumps good..
Should I be concerned about any other areas that may have this stuff that needs to be removed, like in the power head? I suspect that it wasnt flushed properly after every use. But it is pumping and cooling fine at this time.
