Should I keep the auto oil injection?

Got a new-to-me 2000 Merc 60 HP 3 cylinder outboard. It has the oil tank and auto injection system. The thought of the oil injector quitting without warning and tearing my nice engine to bits scares me. I have read where others have chunked it in favor of mixing their own fuel.

So here's the question: should I trust this injector contraption or not?
Also, what modifications need done if one were to want to mix their own oil?

As an aside, when I turn the key on, I hear no beeps, so I wonder if a warning beeper exists at all for malfunctions in temp, oil injection, etc...Should this engine beep at me on starting? And what warnings are supposed to issue a beep?
Also, if the oil injector fails to put oil in the gas, has MERC really protected the engine to avoid a catastrophe. Or is it limited to only if oil level is too low?

Thank for reading and responding!

Go back on the engine, and find a terminal strip where a wire from the OT sensor, a wire from the oil alert module, and a wire into the harness all come together. It's usually above the switchboxes.

With that key on, short the terminal to ground. If the alarm doesn't go off, either the sounder is bad, or the wiring is bad in the cannon plug harness. You have no oil or overtemp alarm.

If it sounds, the oil alert module is either disconnected or inoperative.

It should beep 3 - 5 beeps when you turn the key on.

The VRO topic has been beat to death. Do a search and find all the info you need and then some.

hope it helps

Thanks for the info, John. I'll check out alarms and see if I can get them working.

I'll check past threads on oil injection. I'm new to the forum.....didn't realize this was such a well-covered topic.
