Should I rebuild a TAMD41 Series engine or repower?

I have a 1995 TAMD41 with 15,000 hours on it and mechanic says it a major overhaul. They say 16,000 worth of repairs. Should we rebuild the engine or repower.

We use the engine 7 days a week commercially fishing. Can we get another 15,000 hours and the engine be fine after the rebuild? Or would it be better to repower?

How much would a new same spec engine cost ?

Thanks,

If I were you, I would rebuild the engine. The 41 series is the best diesel Volvo ever made. I don't know how much you would have to pay for a new engine with the same power, but that would be a Volvo D4 engine(the new D3 is also quite powerful). The Volvo D-series has had a lot of problems here in Europe. There are off course many of them, since diesel is popular over here. But the 41 engine is a good work horse and I would not replace it with a D-series.

Off course the new D-series run more efficient than the old ones, but they are more complicated, more electronics that can go wrong.

If you insist on getting a new engine, I suggest you look for a Yanmar, instead of the Volvo D-series. And I say that as a Volvo fan......

Chief, is it an inboard? Or out drive? How big a boat?
I have twin 41A's in my boat, with 290DP out drives.
A really good deal on D4 with out drive is $30K.
Here is a few more prices.
