totaly up to you make sure all water is out of drive and change the gear oil to make sure there is no water from a small leak and trim it down or remove and store

Basically I wanted to see if there's any benefits or pros or cons
pros:
inspect bellows for water intrusion
inspect bellows condition from the inside
inspect gimble brg. and lub real good since ya can spin it with your fingers while lubing it. getting all new grease all the way around the brg.
inspect coupler and lub coupler
inspect drive shaft spines and lub
run alignment check
lub ujoints
lub shift shaft slide and lever
can't steal it if it's not there to steal. and you know how fast it can be to have it off.
can postpone impeller inspection or replacement till mid winter (something to do for the boat when the snows flying) + it's easier to put the lower back on the upper when it's on the bench

cons:
i can't think of any. ya should remove it any way ya look at it to do the pm. ya can put it back now or put it back later imho.

fwiw, i store mine inside in the basement.. i use a home made bell housing cover to keep the elements (snow in my case) out of the bell housing and gimble housing...

as for the gear lub. to ea. his own. i'm no lub specialist so i just use the green merc. high performance gear lub. best i understand, one of it's better qualities is that if ya do get water intrusion into the drive. merc. high performance gear lub mixes with the water thus doing at least some lubricating of the moving parts. other lubs. i don't know if they do this or not. if not. water isn't a lub for the moving parts in a drive...

The main advantage of the 'fancy Merc stuff' is that it has excellent water resistant properties that 'normal' gear oil doesn't have. Should you get some water leak in, through a shift shaft seal or prop shaft seal for example, the normal oil will emulsify almost immediately, and you're left with almost no lubrication. The Merc High Performance Gear Oil will carry up to about 7% water without loss of lubricating properties... Yes, I know I sound like a Merc salesman, but trust me, I have absolutely no love for Mercury Marine! Unfortunately most of the engine care products they sell really do work...

Looks like ill have to buck up and spend the extra cash for the merc gear lube. Very informative Chris! I couldn't find much info on it .

I remove my outdrive every other year. I can do the maintenance when it is off. Even though we have a short season and we only get about 20 hours run time a year I still do all the stuff you would do on a more heavily used boat. It fits in the garage with the drive off too.
