My 1987 Merc 'Classic Fifty' 45 hp has blown up. I removed both carbs and found holes behind the lower carb beaten out from the inside.
Would this motor be worth fixing or would it be cheeper to replace?? How about rebuilding the power head. I dont think I could rebuild it my self but I think I could remove it and install another or this one IF it could be fixed.
So far I looks like $2000 for a rebuilt powerhead. I could not get another motor for that???

Sorry about your misfortune. You could get another used motor for that, but you wouldn't know where it's been and how it was treated. I'd say that if you liked that motor and the rest of it is decent, go for the rebuilt powerhead. If you can afford new, you might consider going with a 4-stroke. You might be able to find a used one of those, but you'd be awfully lucky.

One hidden cost that you need to be aware of...the core. Your current powerhead wouldn't have any core value. Check how that is handled with the place that quoted you the price, but they probably already took that into consideration. Just be sure.
