Hi guys,

Last year before the summer started I changed the thermostat on my 1994 Merc. 5.7, I went with what the book recommend 140, the boat ran fine all summer no problems. But in reading some of the post on this forum some recommend that a 160 stat would be better.

Should I switch to a 160 stat??.

Thanks

I would go with the 160. They say on automobile engines that the temp must me maintained upwards of 180 degress to effectively burn off the noncondesables (moisture) that happens during the combustion process, I don't know why boat engines would be any different in this phenomena?

depends on if ya have raw water cooled or fresh water cooled.
raw water useally run 140* tstat, fresh water run 160*

then simply purchase the one your prts manual lists.
the engineering work was already done, its in the parts book now.
some Carbed motors and about all EFI motors have a 160 T-stat now reguardless of cooling.
however like I said, its simply a matter of typing in the engine seriel number, selecting the correct page and ordering the correct part number.

Re-read Rodbolt's post.....

Put a high temp thermostat and you run the risk of creating acid in the exhaust system.

Al, you've already said the engine runs fine... WHY MESS WITH IT?????

Jezzzz... why do people do that????? (Everything's fine, let's see if I can cause some problems!!)

Go with what is recommended, use the 140. A 140 t-stat will have you running no hotter than 160, which is where you should be with a raw water cooled engine. Go any hotter and you are asking for problems.

Have a great day,

Rob.
