Should I take it in salt water?

I have a '75 Johnson 15hp that has only seen fresh water.

I'm going on a 7 day trip where I will be boating in salt water.
I know this motor wasn't designed for salt water because it doesn't have any sacrificial annodes (that I know of) and the paint job didn't have corrosion resistance in mind when it was painted in '75.

Of course I would flush it with muffs every day after use.
Should I take the risk of the start of inner corrosion?
Thanks

Don't do it. If you can't afford a new engine, don't do it. Why did your own grave. I don't have a long history of engine maintenance experience but I have lots in the area of mine not working. Good luck.

i do it and have no problems i flush for 10 min so i know that thermostat fully opened. annodes are only really for engine that are docked in salt water.i have a 72 evinrude 9.5 i use in fresh and salt with no problems just make sure you flush and rinse the engine good

I do not see a problem, as long as you flush it.

A five gallon bucket with a constant flow of fresh water will do the trick. It'll be a lot quieter too. Just make sure the intakes are completely covered.

Re: Should I take it in salt water?

Thanks!
I thought it would be alright.

I agree if you have the motor sitting for long periods of time with salt water sitting in the system it will have the time to start eating at the metal etc.

What the heck, I'll do it, but will make sure to run it for a couple of minutes in fresh water.

-Does anyone know of a possible product that say you would mix with the 5 gallon bucket of water that kina coats the inside of the engine with a anti - corrosion substance?
Sounds a bit crazy, and probably doesn't exist, but just wondering???

cartoper,

There is a product called: SaltAway. Most larger marine dealers/stores will have it, especially in coastal areas.

It may be available from a vendor on this iboats board.

Perfect! Just what I was looking for. It'll protect for future salt water usage and clear out the residue (if there is any?)

Thanks for the link

See ya
