Should I try to start her?

1982 Johnson 90 outboard.

It has been sitting in this guys yard for years. I was thinking of charging they battery, replaces the spark plugs and lower unit fluid and trying to start her? What do you guys think? He said he let it run until it ran out of gas before it sat so Im thinking the carbs should be OK.

FYI - I know nothing about boats and I am trying to get this on the water for as cheap as possible.

You never know until you try, right? Fresh gas with some Sea Foam in it. A little trick I use is to squirt a little premix gas in each plug hole before I try and start it. If it has been sitting those cylinders are prolly dry as a bone and a lil lubercation would go a long way.

Having said that, I recommend, after you test start it, a new water pump assembly. They aren't that expensive and the piece of mind is priceless.

make sure you run it in a barrel or on "muffs" so the engine gets the cooling it needs. Starting without water will destroy the water pump quickly.

Yea the previous owner gave me the muffs to run it out of the water. I just didnt know if that was a good idea or not. Was looking for some feedback for some people that are much more knowledgeable about outboards than I am. (I dont know crap about them).
