Had to tow a guy in last week. At idle all temps were fine but moving very slow. I decided to try a little faster. @ 1200 rpms I began to overheat. I could shift into neutral run up to about 3000 rpms and get the motor to cool. He later told me that the stream got weaker as it got close to getting hot. I have a new impellar. Motor runs cool @ idle or one plane

Shouldn't do that unless you were really lugging it. Check out the poppit valve. Pee stream should have gotten stronger as it got hot. If poppit was stuck open or the spring is weak, it might dump the water and not let it get to the stats, overheating the engine.

hope it helps
