Hi , I was wondering if there should be a gasket off some sort between the mid and gearbox section on my 225 1988 johnson , its just every time i take it out off the water there is quite a lot off water running out off this joint , i took the two apart and there is no gasket there, the two aluminium parts just seem to bolt together aluminium face to aluminium face , there just seems to be a rubber gasket for the exhaust , steve

If you're speaking of the lower unit to mid-section joint ,you're correct shuckbo.By design ,it's just a metal to metal fit.A bit of leakoff from this joint is acceptible.Next time you remove the lower unit to service the waterpump you can try using a light hone to dress the horizontal joint fits.Maybe be a couple of imperfections that could be dressed off and seal a bit better.Otherwise I wouldn't be too concerned.

There is no gasket between the top surface of the lower unit and the upper housing it attaches to. Simply apply a bead of Marprox Sealer 1000 or Boat Armor Sealer 1000 to the top surface of the lower unit surface before installing it. Wait about 10 minutes after applying it so that it can form a sticky but not runny substance. That will form a satisfactory seal.
