Should this impeller housing be replaced?

Thanks Frank for great impeller removal guide in Force FAQ! : )

After using a tub and muffs, I got no water flow from exhaust (alot of black oil tho) or upper water ports.

See pic of housing. Frank says gouges are a bad sign. This thing looks like a break rotor off a 79 Chevy van.

Also see steel plate and impeller. There was alot of rubber buildup in one of the water ports when I took off the housing. Actually, there was alot of sand in the output channel and many rubber bits in the intake channel. No sign of water ever having the reached the impeller even with muffs.

I forced water through the intake channel and it came out the intake ports above the skeg, so no blockage there I guess.

Thanks for the input.

If it were me, I'd replace everything I could if I could find it all. If you can't find the parts on your own, post the model and serial ## of you motor and someone here can get you some info about parts.

That's pretty bad.Mine are 24 and don't look that bad.Replace.
If the pump is that bad then I'd bet the powerhead's full of crap.

Yep- I concur with the above. It's about $55USD for a complete kit. Replace it yesterday.

Re: Should this impeller housing be replaced?

JerryJerry,

Wish I could have found the $55 kit, had to get one at $100 incl shipping (**********)

its off an 1985 Force85. Located in Atlanta. Freshwater, presummably. Just bought the boat with engine not running. Said it was a simple ignition thing. Perhaps. Got it to start and idle, but not sure yet if all cylinders are firing. Happened to notice no water coming from exhaust or overflow, so stopped test running till I could get impeller(and gaskets and housing) replaced.

Not sure how long the motor was used without water flowing through it. Quit a bit of black oil coming out of exhaust.

After reading the forums about several different issues, I realize my first step before everything else should have been a compression test. : ( So, impeller kit should be here tomorrow. I'll get that on, replace lower unit oil, put lower end back on and get compression tester.

Think i'll hurl if the results arent good.

Wow, JJ -- thats mighty tempting. :)

WIll know something this eve after work if compression is good or rubbish. I'll take that unburned oil/gas/carbon is indicative of a cylinder not firing?

The only place I can think off that oily black greasy thing coming from will be dripping from the crankshaft to the drive shaft. Unless, of course, that black thing is just worn out rubber from the impeller. If it's greasy carbon it could be leaks from the crankshaft which is not a very good sign. And yes, the whole thing needs to be replaced probably including the shaft seal mounted on the housing!

Re: Should this impeller housing be replaced?

OK, compression tested...in as much as the instructions say to do it. I'm getting about 40psi on each cylinder.

Before everyone says OHHH S**T!!...one thing I don't get is why is there a valve stem valve in the end of the hose that plugs into the spark plug hole? Obviously no air can get past it unless the the valve needle is depressed.

But what is supposed to depress it??

Re: Should this impeller housing be replaced?

It's a one way check valve or schrader valve. Air pressure opens the valve. Every compression tester that I've seen has one.

Re: Should this impeller housing be replaced?

Jiggz,

I replaced the housing, impeller, and both steel plate and gasket under that. Replaced the bolts also. The drive shaft was clean (of oil anyway). The black oil is coming out the exhaust...or it was.

Now the engine won't run at all. It might be because I tilted it nearly 90 degrees up to get the heavy arse l/u back in and all the gas ran out of carbs. But, nothing leaked out of the air intake...so, i don't know.

Started raining. Came inside. : (

Re: Should this impeller housing be replaced?

datastream, If you did the compression test correctly and it is only at 40psi, you better take jerryjerry05 up on his offer. That motor won't fire at 40psi. The way I do compression tests is to pull all plugs, insert tester into one cylinder and crank the engine over 4 - 6 times. That tire valve(Shrader valve) you see is to release the pressure built up in the tester. That will reset it so the next cylinder test gives a correct reading.

Re: Should this impeller housing be replaced?

After all you guys help, I could see where this was going, and going quickly. So...decided to cut my losses and picked up a running Force85 for $650. Thanks again for all your help! : )
