I have a 1989 force 125 and when in the water a nice spray comes out of the idle relief holes. When I put on muffs and run it no water comes out of these holes but it does come out of the exaust port on bottom. Whats up with this?

Re: Should water come out idle releif when using muffs?

My grandfather has a '76 140 chyrsler that does the same thing. On muffs he has to fast idle it for a few minutes before it starts spitting out of the idle relief holes.Don't know what the deal is with that. It's like it has to warm up or something but it starts blowing it out in a hurry in the water. On muffs there is not as much water as in the lake so...Not certain but his does the same thing.
When you are idle in neutral in the water, does it spit or spray?Or only when under power?

This Old Boat
I know nothing about your motor but my 1976 15hp Johnson does the same thing and it is normal. My motor does not have a telltail but does have a idle relief port on the back. On the muff no water comes out the idle relief port because have no exhaust back pressure and water just runs out the bottom. In the water get a good spray out the idle relief port. Last year I converted from a 15 inch shaft to a 20 inch shaft and after that get even more spray out the idle relief port.

Is it safe to run motor when no water is coming out of idle relief but is coming out exaust? I could see smoke coming from idle relief.

This old boat
Yes it is safe to run on muff with no water coming out idel relief port. All two strokes smoke some at idle. You should not see any steam. To be sure take cover off and put finger on block. Should be able to keep finger there about a count of 4 without pain. Water coming out bottom same water that would spray out the idle port if blocked exhaust.

Thank you Boatist. I was scared to run it on the because in the water a good stream comes out idle relief but on the muffs no water out of idle releif. I feel safer now, How long should i flush it?

This Old Boat
I flush my motors 10 to 15 minutes after saltwater use. Most wash stations out here have a 15 minute limit. I rigged my flushing hoses up where can flush both motors and wash boat and trailer all at the same time. Main hose goes to a y adapter. one side of Y goes to another Y adapter with shut off valves. This Y I limit water flow with a washer with a small hole. Output from this Y goes to both engines. Other side of first Y goes to my washdown hose. With this set up I hook up both motors and start up then I use hose and wash boat, fishing poles, motors, and trailer. This takes 10 to 12 minutes or a littler longer if it is the last day of our saltwater trip.

Most at the wash station hook up first motor and run for 5 minutes, then second motor and run for 5 minutes, then wash the boat and trailer for for 5 minutes. This may be long enough but I can fush better it and not have to hurry so much when there is a line and still not go over my limit.
