Let?s see what you are towing your Starcraft with.
Here is my old tow rig from my first SC.
Sadly I no longer have this rig as I moved and had to leave it behind.
She was a 52 GMC on a 1975 4X4 frame with a 350 ci on propane.
Built her in 1996 and drove her hard.

1999 Ford Explorer XLT, 4.0L V6 does great with my 16' SS.

I keep overdrive off to avoid excessive shifting(so I don't have to have the tranny rebuilt on her again;)).

2003 Ford Excursion Limited V-10 4x4. I have to explain. We bought this truck summer of 2007 when gas was $4.25/gallon. We have an older Jayco Travel Trailer. The truck was sitting behind a used car dealers building, I assume for quite a while. Stickered new at $47k, we picked it up for 10,900 with new tires/brakes and some other stuff. I do not drive it daily. My daily driver is a '98 VW Golf.

This is coming home with my boat from Rockford Illinois.

So what do you think if it??

Reason I ask is for my life situation (hauling kids, hauling logs, boats are light) I really only have two choices, Burb or Excursion. I currently have the big 3/4 Burb but will need to find a replacement within the next year or two probably.

04 Burb...2500 4x4...8.1L V8 (aka 500 ci)....the "Autoride" version...supposed to automatically detect loads and adjust the ride...seems to work...but try finding documentation explaining how. It averages 12.7mpg (even sitting there turned OFF!:D) Besides the boat it spent a lot of time hauling high school kids to games, etc and since home is kind of remote we spent a lot of time in it. The second row seats are 2 reclining captains like the front...just not electric....nice for long trips. The Starchief is a breeze.

Re: Show us your tow rig

here's mine, attached to Da 'Chief....2002 Tacoma 4x4, 2.7L 4 banger (165hp, torque about the same) , 5 speed. with the SC in tow, i can maintain 65 in 5th on level ground but have to downshift at slightest hill....and for central NM canyons, i'm in 3d by time i get up em.

tradeoff is that i get 24+ in town, 22 with the Portabote on top and loaded for a week camping in Mexico, and 15+ with the Starcraft behind it....might do even better towing the SC but for those aforementioned canyons. fortunately none of those between here and Mexico!

former owner used to tow it with a '74 Westy, all of 1.7 liters and 60-odd air cooled hp!

They only made Excursions from 2000-2005 so you'd be looking for a used one. We love it. It's a true 1 ton now. Even has a solid axle on the front. I upgraded the springs to stock Ford F350 springs, Bilstein shocks and some other improvements and it now tows my TT great. Mileage isn't great, 14 Highway unloaded, it got 12 highway pulling my boat, I get 7-8 pulling my TT, and 10-11 around town. It holds 44 gallons of gas We put about 3000 miles a year on it. Like you said the only thing close to doing the same thing is a 'burb.
The website "Ford Truck Enthusiasts" has an Excursion Forum that's awesome. A lot like our Starcraft forum. Lots of nice helpful people.

Yah, just like boats, I'll NEVER buy a "new" truck!

The mileage you quote there is the same as I get with my Burb now so the pain would be equal. Really painful. You might be getting even a hair better.

I have heard guys really like the diesel Excursions. Of course, I'd need to tack on an extra 8 to 10 K just to get one, bummer. And, you have the up charge for diesel fuel these days, akkkk!

Thanks DJ!

Well, here is what I pull with...
IMAG0079.jpg

1999, 3/4 GMC Burb with the 7.4, 454 - 204,000 miles - she isn't pretty but she works real hard.

I hauled a load of wood over to my brothers house today so no work on the Islander.

CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO TRANSFER THE PHOTO OF MY 16 SS AND MY TOW VEHICLE TO THE LIST. iT IS IN MY PHOTO ALBUM ON MY PERSONAL INFO AREA???? SOME THINGS i'M NOT TO SMART ABOUT Sorry about the capital leter I just noticed. The Van is a 1987 Dodge converseion with lots of fancy accessories. I bought it for $ 500 from a lady I have bugged for 7 years. It has only 52K org miles and is like new. I sold my Suburban the next week. A quick PM I have sent in regards to my 22 Holiday with the 200 johnson.
