1986 Wellcraft Nova23 5.7/260hp with alpha1 gen1 drive 1.5:1.
Last wakeboard run on Saturday heard a loud clunking noise.....only when in gear.....limped back to the dock thinking a possible u-joint.
Removed the drive and checked the u-joints....other than it was time to grease them....they look and feel good......removed the top gear inspection plate and the gears are trashed.
Here's the dilemna......
The price for the new gears and bearings are roughly $4-500.......and as far as I have read here....it is preferred to go with a new lower unit....roughly $7-800.......so...instead of messing with the gears and shimming.....would it be better to get a new SEI complete drive for $12-1300?
I do have a certified Merc mechanic friend.....but it is his busy season.....
