Would an out of balance prop cause the boat to shutter? I am totally new to boating, best comparison is when feels like your wheels are out of balance, noticed the past 2 times I took the boat out, happens around 15-25mph. Really not going faster than that, just pulling my son wake boarding. I have no original documentation for the boat. The prop is not in the best of shape.
How can I tell the characteristics of the prop, I can measure the diameter, other than that are there markings would give more info. TIA

Re: Shuttering

An out of balance prop is probably the most likely candidate if it's that dinged up, or different blades are providing different levels of thrust based on what kind of damage there is.

The wrong thrust washer for the prop will also give a vibration. There's a number stamped on it to use as a reference against prop application charts.

Re: Shuttering

You can measure the diameter of the prop. for a three blade, measure from one blade tip to the very center of the prop shaft and multiply by 2. In math terms D (diameter)= R (radius) x 2 or D=2R. For a four blade prop, measure blade tip to the blade tip directly opposite. You cannot measure pitch but there is normally a set of numbers on the hub or barrel of the prop like 14-3/4 x 17P or a series of numbers that represents the prop manufacturers model or part number.

Re: Shuttering

You should have the prop repaired or replaced. The vibration is not good for the gearcase.
If the prop doesn't solve the problem you may have a bad universal.

Re: Shuttering

Thanks guys, once I figure out the specs will order a new one, doesn't seem worth it to save 30 bucks and have it refurbished or am I missing something
