Shutting Down

I was always taught, on older engines, to unplug the fuel line and let the motor run out of fuel when I was taking a boat out of the water. This was designed to keep fuel out of the carburetor so it would not gum up if it sat for awhile. Should newer boat motors, such as my 1990 Evinrude 115 with VRO, be allow to run themselves out of fuel when taking the boat out for a while or over winter. Will the oiler try to push extra oil into the carb while the fuel is running out? What's the best shut down procedure?

You should not run an engine with multiple carbs out of fuel regardless of period. The carbs will never empty together and you'll be running some cylinders (and bearings) dry.

What iwombat said, and yes, it will continue to pump oil with the fuel line off.

i agree fuel stabilizer, a motor not use often requires a little more maintainance. i personally recommend a decarb annually,, and lower unit oil change every fall before the 1st freeze, always store the motor in the running postion.
