SICK OF THIS CARB! 5.5 Fisherman, leaking,,

I rebuilt my old 61' Evinrudes carb and tried it out last week. Got it running fairly well, but noticed the low speed adjuster is loose yet, and the high speed one was leaking a little. I got some new OEM packing and put it in today. Little improvement on the low speed but it is staying put. The high speed is tight, but leaks a little when run. Not dripping but the tip is getting wet. With new packing I am at a loss as to what to try, I even tighened up more than I wanted to but still seeps out. Any ideas? I could silicone but not sure that would help. Extra packing has not helped either. I know this sits at the bottom of the bowl so harder to control, but am supposed to go fishing in the morning....

It sounds like the packing wasn't put in right. It should stop the leaks and tighten the jet screw, with a light seating on the packing nut.

That thought occured to me but I see no other way to install them... The low speed screw has a lot of looseness to it, like it is worn out. As fo the high speed....just can't figure that one. I installed the packing on the end of the adjustment screw, which was ran through the nut before installation. It "weeps" so far, not sure what it will do at WOT on the lake. Maybe I am screwing it up, just can't see it.

Could someone advise the correct procedure on this? I have diagrams but no instructions. The old ones were pretty much mashed together so I am not 100% how they should be. I think I am right, but this carb is not like any I have dealt with before...

Here's what I do-

Remove as much of the old packing as possible. Then I will put the needle through the nut, place 1 nylon packing washer around the needle till it butts up against the nut followed by 2 cork packing washers. Then I put the needle into the hole and lightly seat the nut. I then screw the needle in all the way (not tight) then I tighten the nut until I have the right feel for adjustment. You don't want the needle to move while you are underway but you don't want the packing nut so tight that you can't adjust it, it's a middle road kinda thing. Then I will back out the needle accordingly be it high or low adjustment.

Hope this helps.

You sure it's the needles and not the float/needle/seat?

well the leakage is occuring out of the high speed adjuster. Coming around the needle itself. I replaced everything in the carb except the main float needle seat since the one they sent me had to have a clip (supposedly) since it has rubber on it and the new float had nowhere for the clip. I know needle works when I turned the carb upside down, as it stopped letting air in. However if this seems a likely problem I can try the new stuff, just not sure if the new needle will work right....

the leakage occurs while running, if that helps

Nylon packing washer??? What nylon packing washer? I've never used one, only the two cork ones.

Speaking of which JSGOLD, how many packing nuts are you putting in?

Well, in a lot of carb kits I have used in the past, I have seen where you would put in two of the cork rings and the nylone ring would go in last, to where it is against the packing nut. This is to not only help keep particles of the cork from getting into the threads, but also to keep from chewing up the cork with the packing nut. The nylone piece is somewhat a washer between the cork and the packing nut. I have used these with good resullts. I have found that it's best to put the needle in, then slide the two cork washers onto the needle, then the nylone washer, then install the packing nut. Works great every time.;)

Should be only one nut with each jet screw??:confused:

The packing nut is the brass nut the adjusting screw passes through, if you leak gas around the adjusting screw, tighten the nut

There are two packing washers per adjuster. Both are tight. Had to tighten the low speed a lot to keep it from moving on it's own. The high speed if tightned too much won't let me adjust it (too tight). Will run it this morning and see what it does.

Look in the OMC kits, they have 2 nylon ones like zeph said to prevent chewing the cork to rat****.

Cool. But it doesn't show that in the parts diagrams! It makes perfect sense.

We took the boat out yesterday and ran the motor a little (maybe 30 minutes tops). Still leaks. I'm going to check and see if I have any fiber washers left out of the Sierra kit and try again. If that does not work I may replace the adjusters themselves or see if I can find some o rings that may help. The motor runs very well. One way or the other I will stop the leak. Could the float needle cause any of this by chance?

If it's not leaking from the carb throat then no, it could be at the packing.

It's virtually impossible for the packing nuts to leak if they are snugged down tight. Are there grooves on the needle valve or in the holes they screw into?

Not sure, will check asap and let you know.... I found a NOS high speed adjuster for less than 12 bucks, including shipping. Buying it whether I need it or not since it is a rare part. If the old one is damaged someway I will at least have that. The high speed packing was difficult to remove since it was so old. I was careful but will need to see if I maybe scratched up the seat maybe....

Re: SICK OF THIS CARB! 5.5 Fisherman, leaking,,

I replaced the high speed needle with a NOS one and CAREFULLY removed the packing, inspected openings and replaced packing in both needles. Please to report no more looseness on the low speed one and no more leaking (so far) on the high speed. Will need to adjust the low speed a bit more but runs pretty well as is and very well st high speed. Ran it a good bit Saturday at the local lake and was happy with with it.
