I was checking on my throttle cable adjustment to fix the idle speed that wouldnt drop back to normal. I removed the cable from the carb and was about to adjust and noticed about a 1/4" of slop. Both ends of the cable housing are secure and tight but the cable has slop at the side controls. I could do the quick fix with a throttle return spring but would rather fix the problem. I was looking at a schematics and was wondering if one of you experts could tell me which parts might be worren?

First thing you do is disconnect the throttle cable at the carb linkage. Then make sure the cable end is adjusted so it puts a slight preload on the carb linkage to the idle position.
Many times, the cable gets wear in it that produces a bit of slop and doesn't bring the carb back to idle.

Thanks for replying Don. I have alerady done that. I dont have any more adjustment left. This cable end doesnt have a sloted end like some I've seen. I guess the cable might have streached but I might not be used to the 1/4" slop in the shifter. The only adjustment is on the cable end and the cheap clamp for the housing used on this boat thats why I figured it was in the shifter. Forgot to mention 97 Four Winns 205 Sundowner Volvo Penta DP w/ omc non vortec engine im the original owner.
