I'm wanting to run side exhaust on my sea ray, because the v8 noises make me happy and I like being that guy you can hear across the lake. For some reason I cant find any side tips that are reasonable priced and am wondering if theres any reason you cant run flush mount thru hull with internal flappers on the sides. The ones I'm looking at would look pretty good just dont have that 45 angle

on the side you would want flush mount

and yes, the three things that make them expensive
  • 316 stainless
  • mirror polishing
  • low volume
lots of research has gone into side tips to prevent water ingestion, I would suggest spending the $600 on a good set of side exits

if you want straight transom thru-hulls, use them in the correct location

Not to many things on a boat that are reasonable, and as Scott mentioned, there are also reasons things are done the way they are

Was afraid you guys would say that. Kinda thought with the built in flappers the flush mount ones might be ok. Back to scouring Ebay and craigslist then.

until his wife/girl/admiral/etc/ says the boat is too loud

or when the headache of listening to exhaust for hours on end drives him nuts.

Nah I never get tired of hearing that sound. One of my trucks is just as loud and I never get tired of that. I found a set of tips from a cobalt boat but they have 1.25 inlets on them. I cant find anything that would go from the 3inch, I think, down to that to make it work.

your going to need 3 or 4" tips

1.25" is a bilge outlet

My old 1500cc VW had bigger exhaust than that.

I doubt Cobalt made the tips, probably made for a Cobalt.

Funny thread. Back in the day most of our friends and neighbors on the river bought Evinrudes since they were much quieter than the Mercs.

maybe since those are obsolete inventory and they need to dump old inventory for tax reasons they are hoping someone doesnt read the fine print, I would do the same.
