I recently purchased a pair of Sierra Carb kits w/ floats for my '77 55hp Evinrude. I read some posts stating that carb floats deteriorate w/ethanol and that I should purchase BRP floats only. The reason is that BRP floats are plastic instead of shellac. I cannot find any information about what the Sierra Carb Floats are made of. Does anyone have info on this? I plan on returning them if they are just going to deteriorate.

Re: Sierra Carb kit floats OK for ethanol??

I've run across just the opposite here, the Sierra carb kits generally come with a new float, all so far have been plastic versus the varnished cork floats which I've gotten from the dealer.
Granted, most of the motors I've dealt with have been much older and the carb kits in stock at the dealer may well have been old stock from way back when those motors were new.
The Sierra kits I've gotten from NAPA were always ordered in for the next day, so they tend to be current stock.

I've never had issues with the plastic floats, but have had many older floats run on modern fuel that lost their varnish coating in ethanol fuel. Of course, being that old, it's hard to tell if the fuel or just age got to the floats.

I've never had a cork float in a Sierra kit, not yet anyway.

Thanks for the reply, I thought they were plastic but wanted to be sure. I'd hate to go through the work of rebuilding the carbs to find out the parts are faulty/inferior.
