I know that Quicksilver brand is a OEM mercruiser part and Sierra is an aftermarket but what does everyone prefer when replacing parts in their boat? OEM is typically more expensive when you are getting your car worked on but it seems that the Sierra and Quicksilver parts are pretty close in price. My dealer here can get Sierra parts faster than Quicksilver so thats why I'm asking.

Re: Sierra or Quicksilver

For wear items that are anything other than filters I strongly suggest Mercruiser OEM parts.

I have used Sierra drive bellows...never again.

It seems as if all their stuff is really close, but different enough it's not right on the money.

In a pinch once I used a Mallory cap and rotor, again, the Merc was much better made.

For oil filters I use Baldwin, Wix or Hastings, for fuel filters either Merc or Racor.

I can't rest easy now because I called my local dealer and gave them a part number for a quicksilver water pump kit and they ordered me a sierra because they can get it quicker. Will it be ok for the season and when I rebuild next year just order a quicksilver?

Overall I've been pretty happy with Sierra, some is junk, mostly decent. Now Mallory is a different story....

If you ordered an OEM kit, and the sold you an aftermarket, shame on them. Or most likely, they aren't an OEM dealer, but can get the OEM parts from a supplier. Be sure of who you are dealing with.

It won't be anything good, I can tell you that.... ;)

Don, I value your opinion and I think I'm going to tell them to eat anything that they order me aftermarket from here on out. Truely I can't believe they did that to me.

Re: Sierra or Quicksilver

Only reason I ever ordered Mallory parts: I buy a LOT of stuff from Summit Racing and (a whie back) saw they added marine parts.

Ordered Mallory cap, rotor, manifold and riser gaskets.

The cap looked like it was made as cheaply as possible in every facet.
The rotor wasn;t much better,
All the contact surfaces had plastic flashing all over them.

The gaskets looked like they were cut out of Captain Crunch boxes.

Guess I wont be buying any Mallory parts any time soon and I'm a huge fan of Summit as well. Thanks for the heads up though Bomar
