Hi- Wondering what everyones opinion is regarding non OEM products ( like Sierra ) vs OEM Mercury / Mercruiser parts .Replacing a complete waterpump assembly in a 1972 Merc I//O . Sierra kit is $40-$50 vs Merc at around $ 95 . Thanks

Re: Sierra vs OEM Mercury

I have bought some after market parts (Sierra, GLM, etc) with great success and others not so much. In order to find out on any specific part, I usually google for any forums comments, reviews, etc about the specific item & brand. Doing that I steered clear of Sierra & GLM brand manifolds and risers. I have bought a GLM trim cylinder at 1/2 the cost of the Mercruiser and it was fine.

I have purchased many sierra impeller kits and other parts without any issues. I did buy an unknown brand bellhousing gasket kit. I will NEVER buy anything other than Mercury bellhousing gaskets. I think you will be fine with the Sierra...

Having used both on customers boats, I would choose OEM hands down for mine.

Re: Sierra vs OEM Mercury

I had a situation where my Sierra impeller was smaller than the OEM. The OEM burned up in the smaller Sierra housing.

So, don't mix your parts
