I'm about to buy a 17' bowrider with a 3.0 liter mercury marine I/O. The engine is seized. Owner said it went under water 2 years ago. He changed the oil 5 times, cleaned it up, and it ran fine for the rest of the summer. He went to start it last year and it wouldn't budge. The boat is in excellent shape and is worth the price by itself. I searched all through the boat, and I can't see any damage from the dunking. Wiring, pumps, bolts, everything looks brand new. No sign of corrision.

Would you pull the engine and rebuild, or replace with a used one?

Is there anything I can do to try to salvage the old engine? Maybe it just needs a good kick to break it loose.

I'd first ask that the boat was free. Small boats are priced on their engine and drive, then the interior condition. Even then it adds little to the price.

You can't tell if the drive is still OK or whether you'll need one of those, too unless the engine will run. That's another $2000.

Shift cables? Steering system? Engine accessories? You could be into this baby for big $.

Regardless, assuming you bought it already or don't care, I'd get a rebuilt from Rapido and call it good.

My first thought was, apply that statement to your head,
while you go find the fattest wallet around, you'll need it.

year, make and condition of boat, price?

If the outdrive is seized, you won't be able to turn over the engine,,, just another though.

3.0's are not used in cars/trucks so you are looking at buying an expensive marine engine or rebuilding what you have.

Since it was dunked, and the engine (or drive) is seized I'd walk away. Too many good boats out there to buy a bad one,,, that will most likely cost more in the end than a boat in good condition.
