For those classic sailing schooner lovers this distinguished guest visited our lil' neck of the woods today.

Bluenose II at Prescott On June 16, 2008

She's got her main mast on the deck. It had to be unstepped to clear the bridges along the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Beautifull!
Every now and then the Tall Ships visit Ludington on Lake Michigan and one of these days I gotta go see them.
Sweet post!

That's a fire sale methinks Angus!! I just chewed up another set of duoprops so my fun money for the month is gone.

No sails for me and especially no wooden boats. Admiral has standing orders to slap me upside the head if I ever suggest getting a wooden boat! ;-)

There's a 1/4 scale replica of the Bluenose in our marina. I'll try to grab a pic and post it here. It's really neat, for sale, but wood! *lol*

Good pic Knotty. It's a beautiful boat and its predecessor sure had a great history and an unfortunate demise. I'm glad somebody had the foresight to lay another keel (& find the original blueprints?) to the great history of it.
We saw it in Lunenburg about 10-ish years ago...very neat stuff and a lot bigger than I thought it was.
We have a wooden boat festival coming up in Victoria in a couple of weeks. It would be a real capper to have the Bluenose II there.
Nice stuff.

As a Nova Scotian, we're real proud of her. Been on her a few times, as just a tourist on the deck. She sure has a great history, as does Capt. Angus Walters,..he was a hard-***** for sure! Our History Channel very often shows her history (Bluenose 1), and to listen to the audio of him is something else!
Thats a great picture of her.

We'll try to get one of her on the downbound portion of her great lakes tour with her main mast up. It would be nice to see her under full sail but the river's too narrow for that.

Re: Sightings: Bluenose II

I don't think many manmade objects grab at my heart like a well done schooner.

My Dad loved sailing vessels and made many scale models from scratch. He helped me make a 3' scale model of the Atlantic when I was in my early teens. Oh! She was so beautiful under sail in the pond at the park.

Knotty,
That'd be a great pic if you can get it...its a one of a kind Schooner (we think). I've seen her under full sail, more than a few times. Her shipyard is a National Heritage Site, in Lunenburg, N.S. One of my prized posessions is a 1921 pic from WR. MacAskill of the Bluenose, called "Jockeying For Position". It was given as a house warming gift for me and my GF. There are several other boats in the picture, but even with a mag. glass I can"t see the name of the other boats.

Re: Sightings: Bluenose II

When watching the black and white documentaries of the races between the Bluenose, and the American Thebaud, at Gloucester, it brings backs memories of what this part of the country once was, especially Lunenburg.
Although I'm not JB's age, I remember seeing her in 1970. She seemed to float like a piece of styrofoam. I have a 12 ft. tinny, so I can't imagine what it would be like.

As promised. This is a 1/4 scale replica of the Bluenose II. Built in Chester Nova Scotia in 1975. Quite a nice example of wooden sailboat craftmanship. It's spent almost its entire life in fresh water.

Nice. I love those old boats.
I've visited many, Chestertown, Mystic Harbor....
Built a few models during over the winters too.
