Silly Question Of The Day

Hi all...I have purchased a new Polarkraft Kodiak, taking delivery as soon as the snow melts in the U.P., hopefully before July. :joyous: I go up to NW Ontario once or twice a summer. The docks there ALL have old tires nailed to the sides for a "cushion". I really do not want the boat to get nicked and full of black marks. I admit that I am overly anal...but... Does anyone have an easy solution here? I know the owner of the fishing camp quite well and he would allow me some creative liberty. My experience with the round bumpers is that they simply bounce out of the way and aren't effective at a choppy dock. Thanks in advance for your suggestions...

Re: Silly Question Of The Day

If he will let you install them, the dock whips that act like arms keep the boat off. Or if he will let you, hang two large mooring bouys and tie to them (like giant fenders).

In the right conditions, anchor one end of the boat away from the dock with the other endat a 90* with the dock (typically the bow but only if you can stern anchor out). Step off then take the bow line down the dock so you are tied at a 45* angle.

You can remove black marks with Varsol and with magic eraser--but the latter is fine wet sanding.

You can nail a section of fire hose to your rubrail and get that commercial/industrial look.

Hmm...

1. Don't use that dock.
2. Use better fenders that don't "bounce out of the way".
3. Suck it up cupcake, and take the black marks with a smile.

Thanks Home Cookin...I thought about the whips, but decided against them for now. Here is a picture of the low slung dock...thoughts on how to affix the large mooring buoys??

LOL BobGinCO...I would GLADLY use "the best" fenders available. Recommendations?? :) If all it was were black marks, I enjoy using a little elbow grease...trying to avoid the rubs, scrapes and nicks...

You might laugh, but how about hanging a life jacket over the side?

Or taking a piece of old carpet and laying it over the tires. The docks around here are made out of tires a lot but most people cover the rubber with carpet and it works fine.

BobGinCO...I would not laugh...thought of that, but the problem is that once the boat rides "up" the lifejackets, or the fenders, ride up and over the tires...and stay there. I've thought about tying a heavy weight to the bottom of them before hanging over the side...but I think I like Aquaman's idea even better. Find a carpet remnant about 15' long and run it along the side of the dock and "over" the tires. Nail it in place with some good long nails and fender washers...still listening though! :D

As for the bread, thank goodness you didn't ask me why I had all that BEER!! :D The boat was packed with provisions for a fishing party of 10 guys for a week on an island fishing camp.

If you didn't have all that bread, you could have brought another case of beer!

Let's see - 10 guys X 7 days X 12 beers a day = 840 beers.
I see about 10 cases - that's 240 beers.

By my calculations, you are 600 beers short!

What you don't see are the other 4 boats tied up to the dock...with more adult frothy beverages... :)

Now that looks like a good idea...I would be curious if it's "heavy" enough to stay down when suspended from the side of the boat...or what ability there is to attach it directly to the dock?

Re: Silly Question Of The Day

Congrats on the new boat.

The only suggestions I have, are expensive.

They actually make canvas covers for over the dock tires, $30 a piece and only canvas.
Better would be the large padded cushions they sell for between rafted up boats, but these are over $100, and are made to be used between 2 boats that are rigidly lashed together.

I think you are best served with the carpet nailed over the tires, but even that could be abrasive.
Perhaps rubber backed carpet, with the rubber side out?

Where do you go in Canada?

We head up to the Upsala area.
But have been to Geralton, Ignace, and west to Eagle lake, and LOTW years ago.

Thanks roscoe...I think I am going to look into the dock tire covers as well....seems easy and fairly effective!

I go north of LOTW on the Winnipeg River, Minaki. Been going there for more years than I care to say. :)
