I can't find a s/n on this outboard I just got... I checked the silver core plug on top of powerhead, or I assume that's what it is, it has a big M, then under that it says J3339923.

Does this help to identify my motor?

On the hood, it says Johnson 115, Hydro-Electric Drive v-115

That is the serial number. Not the model number. A dealer may be able to tell you what the model is, I can't.

The M is OMC's trademark

The serial number on the welsh plug is ownership reasons. That way you can't steal a motor and just change the clamp/bolt on section of the motor.

Yep, all crooks and cops know that. The one that doesn't know it is the guy that buys it from the crook. Then he is in posession of stolen property.
