simple recarpet question

I am replacing the carpet on my VIP Vindicator. I don't know if this is standard in boat building but the carpet was originally installed before the deck was joined to the hull. Therefore, the helm (which of coarse is attached to the hull) and rear bench are laid over the carpet. So....what is the best way to tackle this? Will I achieve a factory finish look if I just cut around it? Do most boat manufactures lay carpet on the whole floor and then install helm etc. directly over it? Thanks in advance to those that know how to do this right.

Hi Kevin,

The simple answer is that to return the boat to the "factory finish look", pull the helm and bench, replace the carpet, and put the helm and bench back. In other words, simply follow the steps the factory took. Can you leave the helm and bench in place and cut around? Sure... It won't be perfect, but it will be OK...

Now for the not-so-simple answer... Why are you removing the carpet? Is it soggy? Is there mildew? Is the deck "soft" in places?

I'm probably just being a "Nervous Nelson", but is there an issue of rot afoot?

Just my $.02...

the helm is often part of the top cap. so, yes, they lower the cap down when the carpet is already in. that said, i doubt many people pull the top cap to replace carpet unless they're already doing floor work. snaps or trim rails of some sort might help.

Nervous Nelson...floor is fine, no soft spots, carpet is just 8 years old now and is getting replaced; but thanks. Where can I get these trim rails; thats what I wanted to do but cannot find them when I google "marine carpet."

not sure if anyone makes pre-fab'd trim rails. i was thinking more of a one-off, homemade design.

or, talk to a boat carpet shop and see what they use. maybe they sell it.
