My windlass(Simpson Lawrence horizon 500) works fine bringing up the anchor but does not drop it down. I have the unit off the boat and when I connect the motor to the terminals it moves one way and when I switch the wires it move the other way. When the small gear is removed( see diagram 1 Gear Out) the big gear moves freely both clockwise and counter clockwise When the gear is in it moves up(counter clock wise) but not down(clockwise). Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is? gear out.JPG gear in.JPG

Not sure, think your going to have to get into it further but have an idea. The shaft/motor might have a coil friction spring on the shaft. The reason I'm thinking this direction is from a hoist motor I rebuilt. Inside, if there is a coil spring wrapped around the shaft, then the spring is used to stop and hold the shaft when power is not applied.

If this is the case, it can be fixed and takes no parts, just some rebending of the spring wire

Hello the following paragraphs are from another forum that I stumbled across while researching the Horizon 500 Windlass it might help you
Taffy

Hi all,

I have a Horizon 500 (not freefall) that will retrieve fine, motor and bearings seem fine, but will not deploy when switch is in the down position. When trying by hand the gears spin fine when turned clockwise (retrieve) but locks when I try to spin the counterclockwise (deploy). Any suggestions?

Thanks
OK - The problem was in the compound gear (center gear). The washer between the smaller gear and shaft that anchors the array in the housing was twisted and locking up the compound gear. I called Lewmar who directed me to a local repair guy. He told me that was probably the problem and he would repair it for labor ($75 / hr) and a new compound gear ($300) dollars. I put it in a vice and turned the smaller gear until it unlocked itself. Put windlass back together and working fine

Thanks for coming back and letting us know what fixed the issue. Sure hope it doesn't bind up again.
