I am looking for a pontoon trailer to haul a 24 ft Aqua Patio pontoon. Weight with Boat,
Motor and Gear is 1700 Lbs. Pontoon weighs 1095 Lbs and the motor weighs 185 Lbs. The rest is gear.

I had a guy call me with a single axle Pontoon trailer he says it will haul my pontoon. It's a Float on But not a float on with the bunks, Nor a crank up but a fixed trailer. He said his Dad bought it to haul his 2006 21 ft pontoon and hauled it two years. But since has bought a house on a lake near me and wants to sell it. He said he would take $475 for it. What do you think? I only haul twice a year and only about 50 miles each way. I know it will have to be 48 inches wide. I won't even consider it if it's only 44 inches wide.

A barge longer than 21' really needs two axles. Are you sure it would even be long enough?

No I'm not sure but the seller thinks it would be. I will have to measure it when he comes up and calls me not this weekend but next weekend. My Deck is 18ft but the toons stick out 3ft in front of the deck so they would have to clear the tow vehicle in turns. I'll measure the length of the cradle/ not the tongue. Then measure the tongue. I really don't think it will be long enough. The other concern I have is. Since it's not a scissor trailer would the tongue be long enough to get the trailer far enough into the lake to float the pontoon off and on without submerging my truck. The Lake's where I would be using it 90% of the time have State concrete ramps and are deep.

Ok I went back and looked at the trailer. The trailer bed is 20ft long and 48 inches wide so it will haul my pontoon but it doesn't have a GVW plate on the trailer and it's a single axle trailer. The tires are 570x8 rated for 910 Lbs each. I am thinking times two would be 1,820 Lbs so the trailer probably has a 2,000 axle. I still think I would have to subtract the weight of the trailer which is probably in the neighborhood of 350 Lbs. I would say the max I could haul then would be 1,450 Lbs. Does this sound right?

You DO NOT want this trailer. The tires are too small and not enough of them. Remember, the weight of the trailer itself is also carried by the tires so it would be terribly overloaded. And that trailer probably weighs closer to 600 - 700 pounds if it has any heft to it at all. Even if you added bigger wheels and tires it may still not do the job safely as you don't know what the axle capacity is. Springs, axle, and tires determine capacity. They are the weak links in the system. This is probably what's called a "Yard Trailer" used by marinas to move boats around a storage area etc. This thing may not even be street legal. Are you sure it is not a home made rig.

I think I would steer clear of a single axle trailer with that large of a pontoon boat. My pontoon was a 22 ft'er with a tandom axle trailer. Better b safe than sorry. Not only for yourself, but also others safety.:)
