Anyone here use the sit on top style kayaks for fishing? I have fished from a sit inside style kayaks, and did not enjoy that, after a half day of fishing. From web searches, the sit on top, seem to be much better for fishing. I am looking for something to fish 1-5 acre ponds, and sections of slower moving rivers, during summer. The Ocean Kayak Drifter model, appears to be a good match for for me (6' 250lb), and this type of fishing. If you have any experience with this Kayak, would be glad to hear about it.

Here is a link to mfg site: web page

I know what you are talking about. That is too big for this type of fishing. I was also considering those pontoon style 1 man jobs. My son just got a kayak, so need to keep up with him!

I thought at first someone was actually sitting in a kayak and fishing.

A friend and I put his kayak on top of my Jimmy and took off to a smaller lake for some Musky huntn.

While I was trolling in my boat he was casting from his. All went well until he oopsed and caught his lure in the front. First couple of times he would have to pull to shore get out and retrieve his lure. This got old fast. To make it short here by the end of the day he had six lures attached to the front of his kayak.

The looks and laughs he got made my day when we got back to the dock.

Sit on tops are the best. I have an Ocean Kayak Yak Board. I think it's about 7 ft. Really a great shallow water small pond boat. Super manauverable. I like sneaking up on bass in flooded timber. The best part about a sit on top is that if you flip it you just fall off, you're not stuck upside down under water.

I really like my sit on top ,dagger 12'6 , if I did have a complaint for fishing though, it would be lack of useable storage, the front hatch is almost impossible to get into while on the water and the rear deckwell is right behind the cockpit. everything must be carried in pockets, lashed to the deck with bungee cord or rattling around the floor of the boat, having said that, if you fish light and pack smart its great! very stealthy and about 3 inches draft, like AJ said, if ya fall off (and I do) just climb back in

I'm more worried about the equipment I might have to go diving for!

BASS TECH just had 2 features on Kayak style boats. I suppose that they have their place.

I've been kayak fishing for a lot of years. I have the Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT. It's very stable. What's also nice is when you anchor in a nice fishing spot you could change your seating position and hang your legs off of the side.
I use the kayak in smaller New Mexico lakes that don't allow motorized boats. I haven't used it in rivers.
A couple good web sites are: kayakfishing.com and kayak4fish.com
It's great fun to hook, fight and land a fish from a kayak. :D

The kayak is in. Should be picking it up, mid-week.

The drifter had the widest beam, largest seat, and largest capacity of the kayaks in that length. While I'm not THAT big, would like the extra stability and room it provides.

Re: Sit On Top Kayaks for Fishing

Maiden voyage was on Saturday. Went about 8 miles, as crow flys, down a small river/medium stream. Would't call it white water, but many series of little rapids, followed by flat water. Largest "falls" we went over was about 1 1/2 foot. Lotta fun. I only went down once, when current pushed me into a tree stump. Had to pull out twice because of trees down, completely across the river. Also saw a number of surprised fishermen, not expecting three kayaks coming down this waterway. We didn't do any fishing, was having too much fun just enjoying the kayaks.
