I picked up what i thought was a good deal. I ended up with a an early 1970's boat with a 40 hp outboard Evenrude/Johnson engine(also early 1970's, not sure about the exact year) and trailer all for 150. I've restored the boat to working, but am having a little difficulty with the engine. The engine is an electric start and shift model and it hasn;t run for a few years. When i try to start the engine it refuses to catch. The electric starter spins the flywheel but the engine will not fully start or even begin to catch. I know the spark plugs are working and the gas oil mixture is flowing to the carburetor. Beyond that i don;t know where to proceed. Any and all tips appreciated, let me know if you need more info.

Hi,<br /> see if this helps u. i had the same problem it wouldnt start worth a sh*t until someone on here helped me out. <br />1)prime the bulb until its hard.<br />2) turn the key to the on position but dont engauge starter.<br />3)push the key in and count to 8<br />4)then try to start the it.<br /> <br />mine fireds right up after that. see if it helps and respond back.<br /> Tex

You said you have fuel and spark, what about compression?<br /><br />When you crank it do the plugs get wet? If not, squirt some pre-mix into the cylinders and give it a shot. Your carb may be clogged. <br /><br />Have you visually observed a spark?

Even after the 8 seconds and the pressure i still can't get it start. When I tested sparkplugs I did see the sparks and the the threads of the plug were wet, but not the actual tip of the plug. I'm thinking its the carb, if the pre mix idea doesn;t work i;m just gonna swallow my pride and take it in. Thanx for the help.

also make sure that the battery is fully charged
