size wire to use with Trolling Motor

Hello
My buddy asked if i would help him wire up his Trollng motor but we are not sure what size wire to use he has a Motorguide 75# 24 volt motor he is putting on an 18 ft boat I was thinking 6 or 8 gauge leaning more toward 6 any help would be appreciated

In low voltage applications like a 24-Volt system, you need to calculate the voltage drop that occurs in the conductor. Typically the voltage drop will determine the required conductor size. The required conductor size based on voltage drop will tend to be larger than the wire conductor size calculated just on the current-carrying capacity of the conductor. There is an on-line wire size calculator based on voltage drop on the ANCOR website. See
