Skeg got chewed up :(

Was out on the river yesterday doing some wakeboarding when all the sudden, there was a loud boom, clank, thud, type of sound, and I knew we had hit something( I was wakeboarding and heard it). Right away my wife stopped the boat, i thought just because she was scared, but it was because she couldnt steer! So I swam back to the boat, very quickly:D and had her turn it off, trim it all the way up so I could look at things, and sure enough the skeg was chewed up, and the prop looked like it got in a fight with something bigger than it. So, we trimmed back down, started the boat, and everything was fine, steering and all, so we headed back to the docks to trailer the boat back home for further inspection. While at the docks, the water safety officer wanted to chat, and seen the damage to the prop and skeg, and wondered where we did that. I told him the location and he said, ohhh, that happens alot, we need to get a buoy up there...............

Apparently there is a water inlet for the powerplant, that sits below the surface of the water. He said they usually have a buoy there, but must not have on there this year yet.......................

Now to the carnage:

Now, heres the dangerous game I play. My wife thinks this is the worst thing in the world, and wants to get it fixed ASAP, from what i've read here its not as bad as it might seem. This allows me to spend money :)

Ive been eyeballing some smart tabs to replace my hydrofoil. While im at it Im going to get 1 or 2 new props, which Ill post about in the prop section(looking for advice). But anyway back to the skeg.

What should I do about it? Does it need completely replaced? I was looking at my overtons and seen some skeggards. Would this be a good option?

I also saw the Blackfin Sleg, which I couldnt find in the iboats store, does it really do what it claims to do?

Some quick claims:
Made from incredibly tough nylon composite that is stronger than steel
Gets you on plane quicker and holds you on plane longer at lower speeds
The added surface area of the Blackfin helps improve stability and handling while decreasing chiming and walking

and a video of the blackfin ICAST 2007 Part 2 http://www.blackfinskeg.com/home/index.php?option=com_seyret&Itemid=67&task=videodirectlink&id=5

good ol boys showing us how tough it is

What should I do about this?

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

As for the skeg. I learned that it's not a real big deal from the folks here. I also checked out the other boats at the landing the last time I was there. There were guys running skegs FAR worse than mine and props FAR worse that the one I just replaced. I'm not sure how they do it, but some of the powers I saw were trashed!!

That Blackfin looks like an excellent product. I can see myself buying one of these instead of having my skeg rebuilt. I need to search here to get opinions if there are any.

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

looks like your skeg has been welded before.witch is ok but it looks like the guy that did it did not get good penetration.get it welded back on but find someone who does tig welding.replacement skegs can be bought from mercury i been welding skegs with both mig and tig and found tig to be the best way.then if you want you can put a skeg guard on .but whats more important right now is that your prop shaft is not bent.some shops will straighten shafts.i do when there not to bent.i just looked closer at the shot from the back your skeg has been done twice look at the paint lines on the very bottom of the gear case this is a good weld as it took this hit and is still there.

not a big deal to fix get yourself a stainless replacement skeg you have got enough of it left to mount the repair to about $100 and 15 min to fix. just slip it on over what is left and drill 2 holes through old skeg and tighten 2 special fastners that come with kit. Iboats or overtons

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

Unless you care about looks just file that skeg to get the burrs out.
Buy the new props in a different pitch than the one that "broke". Then a week after you get them tell your wife, "hey! I found this place where they fix props for a little money, I will fix this one an keep it as a spare". after you have a prop take it running and see how it handles. If you think you still need a skeg get a skeg guard.
Tell her that the tabs push the stern of the boat up so the motor will be higher in the water so that is the way to go. Be careful with that one, if she can pick up on it maybe is better to just say that it will help you plane faster which is the truth...

Finally, open your host file and send iboats.com to 127.1.1.1 (home) and only delete that record before YOU are using the net! ;)

In my opinion, the damage to the skeg is not too bad. Just file/sand the rough edges smooth and get a new prop. The prop looks pretty well toasted, but if was an aluminum prop, then I doubt it did any damage to the drive (such as bent prop shaft) Buy a stainless steel prop of the same diameter and pitch if you boat on a deep lake and think you can avoid hitting any more under water obsticles, OR go back to an aluminum prop (1 to 2 degrees more pitch will get you higher cruise and top end and only recommended if your boat came out of the hole quickly and saw WOT RPM at or exceeding manuf. rating)

Prop choice if a whole different discussion, but I wouldn't sweat the skeg. Just clean up what you have left. My boat is missing almost half the skeg and it has never been a problem. I simply keep this in mind and don't attempt any high speed "evil kinevil" turns as I am sure I lost some hard turning ability along with the lost square footage of skeg......

Please provide more info on your boat. make, model, HP and motor. I see you have a 19 pitch prop. With more info I may be able to assist with prop choice.

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

I can't speak for the prop, shaft, etc., but I did buy and install the Skeggard. Mine wasn't as bad as yours, but I am very happy with mine. Honestly, if you file down the rough edges and straighten it out (if it is bent), you probably won't notice the difference, but if you are like me, I bought it for aesthetic reasons - I didn't want to have to look at a damn cracked skeg everyday, especially because I did it with a dumb mistake. In your situation, it wasn't your fault at all, but it's still ugly.
Installation couldn't be simpler. Take your time lining it up, and make sure you drill straight.
Good luck,
Erik

if you are close to cleveland - let me know - I can recommend a great prop guy in located in the flats - does nice work. We were looking at that fin as well for our skeg - keep us posted as to it's performance. Might save us a few dollars so we can buy more stingers.

Just picked up my reworked prop and am going to have the spare repitched in the spring when the guys new coupons come out.

Also - if you have a location for that bouy maybe we can post it on the ogf site and get someone to get one out there.

Whats the ogf site? I called and raised hell, to date nothing has happened from the power company or the Water Safety guys. Im going to tie a milk jug up there this weekend when Im out.

I havnt let the skeg keep me out of the water yet :)

OMG--I hope you got a different prop. running a chewed up (out of balance prop) can cause damage to many things. The 4.3 v6 engine you have is an awesome power package for boats of yours size. I would recommend a Stiletto Stainless steel prop of the same pitch and diameter you currently have. Your performance will improve in all areas going from aluminum to SS. Hole shot, lower RPM at cruise speed, and top end speed and rpm.

Good luck!

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

I was on my wake board a couple years ago when I saw mud in the water I was going into. I tried to yell to my wife to stop but it was too late. My skeg was broken and bent quite a bit.

I bought a skeggard and installed it but I had a hard time because the skeg was bent. I finally straightened it after a couple days and it turned out nice. Funny thing is that the skeg was wrecked but the prop had absolutely no damage! I imagine if I didn't have the skeg on there, I would have had to buy a new prop. That is one reason I decided to put a skeggard on it. The other reason is because the motor looks rediculous without it. It looks quite nice with the skeggard installed. Just my two cents.

Clean up the skeg and fix or replace the prop. Aluminum is a lot more forgiving if you run in shallower waters. Stainless has a lot less "give" and can transfer all the shock to the gearcase components.

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

Supposedly the skeggard bolts will break and the skeggard will drop off if it is hit hard enough. This is to prevent damage to the whole unit. I'd probably be mad if I lost my $100 skeggard though.

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

I have a skeg guard on my bravo 1 . the stainless steel is very strong. in fact I ruined the 1st one by dragging it on a dip in a parking lot. it turned the bottom completely under ,rolled 180 degrees. pealed 1 fastner off. replaced it with a brand new one with no problem. i'm sure that an aluminum skeg would have broken completely off.

Re: Skeg got chewed up :(

It's a sad state of afairs when irresponsible big shots leave their unmarked junk in the water. I was on Keystone Lake, in OK., a U S Army corp lake last May and came across a concrete pier about 10 ft X 10 ft just awash at the surface of the water with no marker. The lake level was above pool. This thing would shear the whole bottom out of most any boat moving at speed. I went into the Corp office to complain with no results to date (8-17-08). There are several of these piers placed and left in the lake by the corp when the lake was built. I also E-mailed the Corp home offise with no reply. I guess someone will have to die and the family sue to get markers.
