I was smart enough to find a rock with my 1995 30hp evinrude, & broke 3" off the skeg, I have the broken piece. I was considering having it welded, but I'm concerned about the heat from the process, on the gearcase. THOUGHTS?

I'd be concerned, too. I would find an epoxy made to bond aluminum (now used in may car bodies)

Want to do it right? Go ahead and have it welded. Bevel the edges that are to be welded together. Rig-up a fixture to hold the pieces together and in alignment. Remove the top gear lube fill plug to prevent build up of pressure in the gear case due to heat. Keep the gear case full of lube to dissipate the heat. First tack weld in place and remove the clamping fixture. Now proceed to weld in sections if necessary and monitor the prop shaft portion of the gear case by feel of hand. You'd be surprised how much you can weld and still keep things cool. If things start to get too hot stop, let it cool, and repeat until done.

Thanks for all of the response. Used the boat this morning, & it ran just the same as it did before I got stupid. For now I'll have to remember that the bottom 3" of the skeg is gone. I'm thinking more & more that this is a problem left to ponder on a cold windy day in the future.
THANKS TO ALL: JOHN

they weld skegs every day. Out 2 launch has the process indicated. would cost you about $35 to $50 at the places I have used.
