Ok so I bought a repairs skeg for my 76 Evinrude 115hp. Most of the pictures I see it should be straight down by the prop. The replacement one is swept back.
Would it hurt to leave it swept back, as long as it clears the prop, or should I cut it straight down?

The early models had the skeg that you have. The later (updated) models use the swept skeg. That differentiates the old cases from the newer. The engine probably won't know the difference. The change occurred sometime around 1980 or so.

Great, thanks for the input guys. I'm going to have one of the guys here at work weld it on for me over the winter...doing the water pump at the same time.

Leave the oil in the case when getting the welding done, it will act as a heat sink. Well maybe drain a couple of tablespoons out to allow for expansion. After, fresh oil. The oring on the bearing carrier is most at risk, so some fill the exhaust passage with water keeping the case tilted so the water stays

Thanks for the advice.

Working in a machine/fabrication shop has its advantages...
