What exactly is the purpose of the Skeg?? I broke mine clean off, thought my boating trip was over but decided to give it a shot anyway, didn't notice any differnce with it off & ran all day long.. I plan on JB welding it back on, but was just curious

Re: Skeg

The skeg is actually a "rudder" for steering. I wouldn't run long without it as it also protects the prop somewhat in shallow water.

Re: Skeg

I would think your steering would pull hard to one side. They also help protect your prop. I know some people cut them down on their raceing boats. I don't think JB Weld will hold. I broke mine off also. I had about 1/2 of an inch left. I mig welded another one on with aluminum wire. You have to be very careful not to heat it up to much or you will ruin the seals. make sure to crack open your vent plug also so it can breathe.

I don't know if I made it clear enough, but take your time when mig welding this. I pretty much just tack welded it then let it cool, then tacked it again and let it cool, etc. etc. Don't try to tig weld it is way to hot.

Re: Skeg

I thought my stearing would be all over the place as well but it steared just fine. Thanks for the welding tips, my In-law has a welder so I'm going to see if he can help me with it..
