Re: ski prop?

If you are having problems with pulling up skier, you should be dropping the pitch not increasing it.

Increasing pitch will give you more speed but less pulling power.

I run a 90 hp on a 17' bowrider.

I run a 21" prop which with normal load (2 to 3 adults) gives me at WOT about 5600 RPM (about 100 RPM above max RPM).

I don't have a problem with a 200lbs skiier that knows how to ski. For inexperienced skiiers, I put on a 17" prop that wold probably go to 6000 RPM. I just don't let it go that high.

Tx.

Joe

Re: ski prop?

THANKS JOE, I WAS LEANING TOWARD SAME SIZE JUST GOING TO A 4 BLADE, WHICH FROM ALL INFORMATION I'VE READ MIGHT DECREASE MY RPMS ABOUT 100 SO I'LL STILL BE IN RECOMMENDED RPM RANGE!!!
CHAZ

Re: ski prop?

Or get prop repaired, buy some smart tabs to help your boat plane better. The theory is,smaller pitch alows your boat to boat to plane faster( kinda like using a lower gear) but decreases top end speed, lowers fuel economy, and you have keep an eye on your tach to avoid over rpm.A 4 blade prop probably won't make all that much of a diference. If you can borow one for a test run before you buy.

Jim

Re: ski prop?

Here is an interesting story!.

My friend was pulling his kids (skiing) quite a bit the summer before last with his 18 ft 190 Hp bowrider. With full throttle he could get up on plane with some effort and time, but the acceleration was neck snapping once the boat came out of the hole.

At the end of the season his wife took the kids for their annual health check for school and noticed that their arms had grown a bit more than their other parts.

Last summer he replaced the prop on his boat for a lower pitch because the kids were getting bigger and he wanted to get them up quicker. It worked, they get out of the hole a little better and then accelerate at rocket like speeds.

Mid way through the summer he noticed that his wife kept yelling at the kids to stand up straight, but no matter how erect their knuckles dragged on the ground like little apes. After numerous trips to the doctor with horrible concerns of some genetic problems, the good news was that they would eventually grow back into there arms. The doctors wrote a prescription for Smart Tabs and told them to pay for the medical expenses with the savings from the fuel costs, because they could now go back to the original prop and accelerate smoothly when pulling the kids. No more hole shots because there was not more hole!

OK, OK The story is fiction, BUT the results are true! Have fun this summer!
