I have a 1954 2.5 HP Elgin Model No. 571.58401. While running, the motor shudders and recoils (or shakes hard) inconsistently but keeps on running. I recently cleaned the tank and lines but not the carb. Could this be trash left in the carb or an interal problem. It was doing it before I cleaned it. There had been quite a build-up of rust and sand like stuff in the tank.
Thank you steelespike for the earlier reply. That is a great resource.

Would you call it like a sneeze? If so that
is usually an indication of a lean condition.
The carb probably needs a good cleaning any way
what with that dirty tank.
Have you been able to adjust the high and low speed mix knobs?
I dont remember if we talked about that.

I was going to clean the carb but was afraid of doing more damage than good. Gaskets and float settings were my main concerns.

Left out.. Yes, like a sneeze. The lower the RPM's the more the engine hesitates. How do you distinguish the high and low speed mix knobs?
