I have an opportunity to get a skurfer rage for 50$. What is the difference between it and a real wakeboard? Struggling to get all the play stuff I need since buying my boat. Only have one kneeboard so far. Need tubes and wakeboard and another kneeboard also.

Re: skurfer rage?

the difference is about 30 years of innovation. Skurf boards are like small surfboards with straps, and a huge metal fin. Modern wakeboards are thinner, lighter and stronger. They typically come with boots for bindings. They are symmetrical so you can ride forwards or backwards. The fins are smaller and exchangeable. Some boards have molded in fins.

Considering you can get a beginner set up for around 200, I wouldn't buy that thing. Another thought, since those boards are foam filled, the thing could be waterlogged, making it really hard to ride...

I got ya. I know what a wakeboard is and how they are designed. Just wondered how a skurfer compared. 200$ is quite a bit of money. But it doesn't sound like I'd enjoy the skurfer, so ill just keep looking for a used wake board.v

$200 is cheap for a wake board.....

Check out www.evo.com and look in their "outlet" section, nice boards and bindings can be had for cheap.

My board and bindings pushed close to $600.... Lol. You get what you pay for, I started with a cheap bass pro special package... Then bought a liquid force trip and closed toe bindings, huge improvement... Now I'm onto a Ronix one setup and it's even better.

that's a nice site 3mile. I've never tried closed toe, is it really that much different than open toe?

A few beginner tips for the OP:
Sounds like you want a starter board for everyone to use, consider one with straps (they fit all shoe sizes) and a little on the larger size. A smaller person can get up and ride a larger board, it just starts getting cumbersome when you do tricks. A larger person is going to have trouble learning to get up on a smaller board...

Get a variety of fins, and try them! A larger fin will help it track straight, good for first-timers, but after a few rides you are going to want the board to slide a little. You will get a feel for how the board tracks with a particular fin. When I first started the board I used came with a very small fin for the front (used when you ride backwards). Everyone that rode the board would wipe-out when they tried a 180. Well I bought a better/larger fin and that fixed the problem.

Use a non-stretch rope. This is super important when you start jumping the wake, a stretch rope yanks you...

Try starting from a tube. Sitting on the edge and letting the boat pull you at a fast idle lets you figure out the angle and position you need to be in, plus your butt is already out of the water, you're already half way there!

There are probably some more tips I can think of. I'll let you know.

Check your local Craigslist. I have bought and seen good beginner boards anywhere from $50-$100. In Florida there is a lot of wakeboarding going on. Good luck. I rode a Skurfer Rage and Skurfer Blast back in the day. Opps, I'm showing my age.

Re: skurfer rage?

Yeah, my father got a nice board on craigslist for 100$. With bindimgs, I'm hoping to get as lucky lol. I really don't like having a fin at all. I like the feel of a slick bottom. I weigh about 175, so I don't need a huge board. But I have a good friend who is about 200 who is having trouble learning on my dads board. My dad weighs about 190 and boards on it fine, but he takes right to everything with ease :p

I get about 3 feet of air. I think that's just the limit to the wake I haveavailable with a transom hook (no tower).

skurfer... thats a term I haven't heard in 20 years! The ONLY place that should be is hanging on the wall as an ornament. I absolutely wouldn't allow a beginner ride that, it would be for nostalgia rides only by an experienced boarder.

Re: skurfer rage?

Ha A SKURF now that brings me back. I bought one iin the early 90's before there was wakeboards. Mine is very slim and long about 2 plus inches thick with 2 straps to hook your feet onto. It is not an easy thing to get up on. Most of my buds couldn't do it. Being strapped into a wakeboard with booties is one less thingg to worry about like when your foot falls out of the strap and down you go.
I agree it is a nice nostalgia piece that can't be compared to a modern wakeboard. They can be fun but hard to use kinda like getting up on a slalom ski, you need a powerful boat to get it up quick so you don't get dragged and a strong upperbody to hold on long enough to get up on plain.
Who knows try it you might like it. Get some sex wax for the deck and you will be able to hang five while riding. Now I'm showing my age.

Re: skurfer rage?

Because they are thick and very buoyant (and have such sloppy bindings), on a deep water start you can't pull the board down into the water like a wakeboard or slalom ski. Extremely awkward. I managed some dock starts on one but let's just say, the crappiest wakeboard you could ever buy is waaaaay better than a Skurfer.
