Just bought a 89 Kingfisher this weekend with a GT 150.My first boat. The guy that sold it to me,set the idle up when he started. He told me to start it like that. When I do the engine bangs a little going into gear. After running awhile the idle settles down and I can still a hear and feel going into gear,is this normal for a johnson?

You should bring the idle down before shifting into gear. Shifting into gear at a high RPM is really tough on the gears/ lower unit.

Practise makes perfect, so dont worry about it.

The one thing that I can tell you is a little tip regarding shifting. Be sure that you shift into gear in a sure, quick movement. You want to snap it into gear. Slowly eaaaasing it into gear causes the gear and the dog to bang bang bang against one another, rounding their precisely machined edges, which will eventually lead to it jumping out of gear at higher RPMS. This is an expensive fix, and you dont want that.

So long story short, snap that shifter into gear in a sure, quick movement. Your gearcase will thank you, along with your wallet.
