slight wobble

I have a 1994 merc 3.0l with-out power steering. The problem I am having is that The pully that the Alternator belt is attached to is wobbling sorry I dont the name. But the wobble is happening at around 1500rpm and it rubs up against the block at that speed. RPM's above that I dont notice the rub maybe because it is going to fast. IS this a problem somethng the needs to be fixed asap. I have a friend that told me his dad's boat did that and the ran the boat for a few years beofre they sold it with no problems. So what u guys think? Thanks for the help

Re: slight wobble

It is the pully on the top of motor. The crankshack pully is the bottom one right? It doesnt rub all the time you can see it.
You think there could be some build up on it that causes it to rub at the low rpm?
How can it just bend by it self?
I think my alt needs to be tightned u think that would help fix the problem?
Sorry for all the Question. thanks for your help

Re: slight wobble

That would be the Waterpump Pulley...........

My 1st Guess would be that the Waterpump is about to Die.........

You're Right,... Pulleys don't just Bend,.....
But,... The Waterpump Can wear out........

Re: slight wobble

You mentioned you "thought" the alternator needed to be tightened. So why not check it and tighten it? If its loose, the belt can flop around and possibly jump off, or give the impression its the water pump pulley thats bent. Next, tighten the water pump pulley bolts. To make sure the pulley is or is not bent, remove the belt and turn the pulley by hand. If it wobbles its bent and should be replaced and cost is only a couple of imported beers. Grasp the pulley and move it up and down and side to side. If there is any obvious play, the water pump is going south and will soon fail entirely. Nothing should ever rub. If it does, its a problem and should be fixed.

Re: slight wobble

this is Ctboater420(forgot password and no longer have that email)I just want to clearify we are all talking about the same pulley. If you can look at the link I supplied. The pully I am talking about is the one above the front engine mount with the 5 blots in it. That pully started to wobble dont know how but it has. Almost like it is out of balance rubbing on the block at low RPMs 1200-1500. Rubbing in and out. I have noticed the belt could use some tighting could that fix the problem u think? Is it something that needs to be fixed ASAP? It was not like that when I winterized it last year.

http://www.ctfisherman.com/cgi-bin/photopost/index.pl?photo=10138

Thanks for the help everyone. This site is a great help

Re: slight wobble

That is the engines "Circulation Pump" in marine terms, 'Water pump' by automotive terms.
Anyway. the bearings are shot in the pump. Just replace it with a new "MARINE" circ pump, don't even think about automotive, they won't last.
Also, it's not 5 bolts showing, it's 4 bolts holding the pulley on the shaft (Center of the 4 bolts)

The pump with the problem is #7 in the picture.
