sliping out of gear

I took the boat out today for the first time and it ran great except it seems like the idle is high and when I excelerated all the way it slips?????
I believe its a 1979 or that era 200 hp. evinrude.
any ideas???

You most likely have a spun prop. The propeller has a rubber bushing between the inner and outer sections of the hub that is designed to slip when underwater objects are struck. Over time heat and age wear on the bushing and they break down and begin to slip. A prop shop can repair the bushing.

You can use the cotter pin as a pointer and scribe a line across the face of the propeller. If the line moves in relationship to the cotter pin after running, you will have the problem nailed.
