Slippage?

Hey all...

Tried searching this forum for the answer (man there sure is a lot of post here) but had no luck.

Anyway took out the pontoon barge yesterday. Has a 89 60hp Johnson VRO... We were on a lake we'd never been on and ran thru a shallow area hitting and dragging thru a lot of sand and seaweed...

Started having slippage problems. Does fine in forward untill I get up over 3000-3500 rpm. Then its like something is slipping and the engine revs way up but goes no faster... Actually seems to slow down...Any idea what I tore up??

Thanks in advance!
Byron...

Re: Slippage?

sounds like you spun the hub.
there is a rubber hub inside the prop.
you can either replace the prop or have a prop shop replace the hub.

Did you actually look to see if the prop is fouled with weeds?

Yep checked it when I pulled it out. No weeds. Free spins in neutral and has resistance when put in gear. I didnt push hard tho to see if the prop would slip.

Re: Slippage?

Even if it is slipping it is unlikly you could make it slip by hand unless it is VERY bad. Unless you are as strong as 60 horses, that is. Make a mark on the prop nut and another mark on the propeller itself, aligned with the first mark. Run the motor till the suspected slippage occurs, then stop the motor and look at the marks. Are they still aligned? No? Then the hub slipped.
